European Vacation 2012 - A Day in Lisbon - June 22

An ALL day trek down through Lisbon. We started at the top of the hill at the "Estufa Fria" (a humungous, park-sized, cool climate green house) and walked all the way down to the center of the city, up to the castle, and then finished down by the Riverfront at the train station for the trip back to Cascais!

At the top of the hill, starting point. You see the river down there? And up on that green hill on the left is the castle, you can just make out the outline on the top. This is our trip... START

This is a palace turned prison!

Nice shot of the Portuguese flag

A "Portuguese" style water fountain. It's hard to tell, but it shoots straight up, can't decide if that's a better design or not. :)

Portuguese style hot dogs. Those are fried potato fries on top. For some reason that's how they like to eat them.

Really amazing architecture, all over the city. A LOT of moorish influence.

and everything is elaborate!

Cherry season! This is a cherry street vendor in central Lisbon. These and ice cream stands are everywhere! (the cherries are MUCH better, lol)

The castle at the top and a busy Central Lisbon street

A whole avenue closed off and filled with restaurants... and tourists! :)

Where we had lunch... this little place has been here since 1840!!!

Yummy, quick lunch! And of course a beer for me! Cheaper, and yummier, than a Coke! :)

since the advent of synthetic cork, the Portuguese have expanded their cork products. Cork is a huge product for Portugal (and probably 95% of cork is produced in Portugal) and so it's a huge loss for them with so many wine makers using the synthetic cork.

Rua da Prata = Silver Road
There's also a Gold Road, both contain tons of jewelry shops

A jewelry shop on Silver Road

Traditional Portuguese jewelry for necklaces and earrings.

Some more traditional style necklaces. These were worn a lot by women getting married; the more necklaces (traditionally in gold) the bride wore, the wealthier she was.

Taken from the tower in Central Lisbon, that's the castle on the left of that hill.

Some very old archetecture.

I love the inside of the old shops. These are entirely arched and quite tiny.

A super cute restaraunt, also with lots of arches.

A traditional Portuguese toy. As you move the paddle around, the ball swings in a circle underneath, causing the chickens to peck up and down.

Going up to the castle you see lots of the "real" residents of Lisbon.

The castle! Can you tell Téo is NOT happy about being next to that ledge? :)

A huge concert at the castle. I sooooo wanted to stay and listen, but we had to get back before it started. We did hear them practicing though and it was awesome music, sort of a modern take on traditional sounds!!!

View of the Tejo River from the castle.

Another view from the castle.

Inside the castle grounds.

An old olive tree... VERY old.

hmmm... I suppose a moat used to be here, this is inside the main castle walls, but outside of the center walls.

The central castle walls, where the heart of the castle is.

a window! :)

A walkway around the inner walls. Téo was not liking this walk. :)

I love imagining life ages ago... a central watering spot.

I love taking naturally framed shots. This is the door leading into the center of the castle.

The central grounds. I love how they've put up some wooden stalls, it lets you imagine how the castle must've been filled with these types of structures in it's day.

Around the walkways on the inner wall, just gorgeous.

More walkway...

It's quite a labyrinth.

Gorgeous!

Me! Tiago took the pic and Téo was off somewhere exploring :)

Back down from the castle, heading towards the River. This is the "Bicos" house, bica means peaks and this house is covered in little peaks or points. :)

Praça do Comercio or the Commercial Plaza. The entrance from the river to old Lisbon

getting our train tickets back to Cascais

The trip from Lisbon to Cascais has the best views from a metro anywhere! :)

--into Cascais, here's that ocean swimming pool as seen from above

European Vacation 2012 - A walk through Cascais - June 20

We walked downtown Cascais to the government building to finally be able to get Teo's Portuguese ID and Passport... after 11 years of back and forth paperwork! Here's what we passed by...

an adorable restaurant

tons of balconies and bougainvillea

a HUGE market

complete with old Portuguese men selling potatoes :)

a humongous fish market with every kind of sea life imaginable

this red one is my fave: dourado

tons of sardines... the larger ones that you grill, not the ones that come in a tin :)

the most amazing piri-piri chicken place (whole chickens roasted on a spit with HOT piri-piri pepper seasoning!

of course, the gorgeous beach

and boardwalk

lots of sailboats

and huge residences, owned be the governments of countries and such :)

mmmmm.....

a favorite lunch spot

the ocean pool (a wall is built up to let in sea water but stay fairly calm for swimming)

GRILLED fish, yummmmmmm....
(yes, with the head still on, lots of good eating there... just not by me, lol, I'm not that acclimated to Portuguese eating! :)

Tiago's lunch: grilled bacalhau (dried salted cod) over smashed potatoes and TONS of olive oil)

just for fun... the Portuguese version of condiments, everything comes in a packet :)
